NE "poetry slam" tests students' creativity and expression

On Friday, April 28, we at Varnett Northeast had a contest called "poetry slam."

Out first contest involved kindergartners through second-grade students at 9:30 a.m. Everyone was excited and ready to begin,  with music setting the mood. The contest was very difficult for our judges. who were Ms. Mary Lewis, Ms. Kayla Kinner, Ms. Scarlette Swanson and Ms. Jessica Briones.

Nevertheless, the winners were Ms. Angela Howard's kindergarten class; Ms. LaJuana Short's first-grade class and Ms. Lisa Reed-Richards'  second-grade class. They all did an outstanding job.

Our afternoon poetry contest began at 1:30 p.m. for students in the upper grades. The winners were Ms. Nandi Rease's fifth-grade class; Mr. Kayode Omolayo's fourth-grade class, and Ms. Elizabeth Phillips' dance team, who recited and danced to their poem.
