On September 17, 1968, Congress passed legislation that recognizes the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans. The result was the establishment of National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was during the week of September 15.
The law was later expanded and amended on September 15 1988 and proclaimed as “National Hispanic Heritage Month.” Each year since then, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated across the United States from September 15 through October 15.
This month, The Varnett Public School’s Northeast Campus celebrated by honoring the cultural diversity and unique contributions of the Hispanic community in the United States, which includes people from at least 20 different Spanish-speaking countries. Our students participated by reading stories about great Hispanic leaders, creating arts and crafts items and all classes participated in a door-decorating contest.
On October 9, 2014 the Northeast Campus welcomed more 250 parents to the campus for our annual Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon. Students and parents had an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful lunch provided by the Varnett Food Service Department.
This community involvement event was a huge success and we look forward to welcoming the community back for our special luncheon in celebrating Thanksgiving.
