Math Night turns into a carnival for parents, students, staff

Math Night on Wednesday was loads of fun!
 
When members of the community entered the building, the sound of laughter and math conversations dominated the cafeteria. ”Math is now my favorite subject," one student declared.
 
One of the most heartwarming experiences was to see the parents, faculty, staff and students come together as one. Smiling from ear to ear, Campus Director Toni Fisher was just as excited as were our students. "This looks and feels like a math carnival," Ms. Fisher said.
 
In all, about 100 parents and 150 students attended the event.
 
Parents, faculty, staff and students helped set up and run math stations. It was a positive atmosphere from beginning to end and it felt amazing to see visitors and school members learn and enjoy math activities. To see the faces of parents light up when they won door prizes --especially the dads --  was unforgettable.
 
 
The staff, parent liaison and Varnett Northeast PTO members all participated in brainstorming sessions and gathering materials. The excitement from this collaboration spread all over campus. Members of the science, elective, social studies and reading departments also participated and showed full support of Math Night. This type of collaboration made the event a huge success and enhanced the spirit of The Varnett School Northeast.
 
The stations were filled with hands-on and real-world activities that included the use of technology. Parents were shown ways to bring math to life at home through games and activities that include household materials. Our parent engagement liaison did a fantastic job of sharing with parents information about a healthy heart.

During the Math Night event, parents connected with their children to talk and learn about math. They engaged in each of the station’s activities. The event also created an opportunity for teachers to be involved as both parents and their children were expanding their knowledge of math.
