Houston firefighters preach safety to young students

Houston firefighters came to the Northeast Campus equipped with a fire truck and plenty of information about fire safety and prevention.

The visit occurred during National Fire Prevention Week, Oct 7-13, but firefighters emphasized that fire safety should be practiced all year long.

PreK and kindergarten students watched attentively as one firefighter slowly put on his safety gear, and the students asked lots of questions along the way.

Many potential fire hazards go undetected because people do not take the simple steps of fireproofing their home..

According to About.com Guide, a fire safety checklist should include:
--Installing and maintaining smoke alarms outside every sleep area and change the battery at least once a year.
--Designate two escape routes from each bedroom and practice them regularly.
--Learn to "Stop, Drop and Roll" in case clothing catches fire.
--Do not store old mattresses in the home or garage.
--Kids should learn that matches, lighters and candles are not toys. Matches and lighters should be stored in a secure drawer or cabinet.
