Northeast PreK students practice recycling, learn about environment

Turn out the lights when you leave a room and think recycle.

Those were the lessons learned by PreK students in Tiffany Morgan’s class as they celebrated Earth Day, an annual April 22 event held worldwide to demonstrate support for the environment. During the week the 27 Northeast Campus students made a recycling bin and collected recyclable  materials such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper.

“The children need to know the importance of saving and protecting the Earth,” Ms. Morgan said.  The students also were reminded to turn off lights when they leave a room and to avoid keeping the water running when they brush their teeth.

In addition to the recycling activities, the class watched  Dr. Seuss' “The Lorax,”  a story about the plight of the environment and a character who speaks on behalf of trees. “It shows what happens when we waste our resources,” Ms. Morgan said. The students also read “The Lorax” book.

The week-long project was designed to remind children to be aware of the environment well beyond the one-day commemoration of Earth Day.  Some students proudly proclaimed that they have recycling bins at home, Ms. Morgan said.

The students filled two large boxes with recyclable materials and Ms. Morgan capped the week by hauling the items to a Pearland recycling center.
