Work under way for Northeast Campus expansion

Exciting times are ahead as a vacant strip retail center was razed to make room for a major expansion of the Northeast Campus.

The 30,000-square-foot addition is expected to be ready for the 2014-2015 school year and will feature extra classrooms, a multi-purpose room with a stage, gymnasium, new playfield, garden, teachers’ work room, new parking area, and a covered drop-off area for the students, said Ms. Twilet Alexander, the campus director.

Recently, the plan was unveiled in front of a group of excited parents, teachers and students in a brief presentation attended by Dr. M. Annette Cluff, superintendent of The Varnett Public School and Mr. Alsie Cluff, Jr., the district’s operations and facilities director and a member of Varnett’s board of directors.

“It’s going to be nice to have more open space,” said Ms. Gladys Gutierrez, the mother of a 1st grade student. “I like the fact that they will have a gym and it won’t be a burden on the classrooms.

The extended school building will be somewhat larger than the demolished retail center and will closely reflect the current architecture of the area, with an L shape. The construction will be brick and mortar from the ground up.
