Northeast Campus upheld its tradition of participating in the MLK Grande Parade Monday, with 65 students marching to celebrate the life of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The theme of the 22nd annual grande parade was “It Takes A Village” and emphasized a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The message was clearly articulated throughout the one-mile route that started in Midtown near Houston Community College – Central. The weather was perfect for the event.

The Varnett cheerleaders were in good company. The grand marshal was Rushion McDonald, a native Houstonian, University of Houston alumnus and the executive producer of the Steve Harvey Show and Family Feud. Mr. McDonald has been instrumental in establishing charities across the nation through his philanthropic endeavors.

Other participants included new Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, marching bands from the University Of Houston and Prairie View A&M University and members of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. Overall, there were more than 300 culturally diverse performing groups from across the United States, featuring the nationally acclaimed Marching 100 from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans and the award-winning Belaire High School marching band from Baton Rouge, La.

“We had a great time cheering with our friends," said Stephanie Chavez , a fourth-grade student from Northeast. “I loved that I was able to see other cheer and dance groups from different high schools and colleges.”

Another fourth grader, Mariah Artiga, also had fun. “I love that we all come together for this parade to honor Dr. Martin Luther King,” she said. “I had so much fun and cannot wait for next year!” It was the 5th time the Varnett Public School has been represented in the parade on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.

All my cheerleaders were super ecstatic about participating in this year’s annual event.  They put in time and effort to be ready to march in this prestigious parade. I am so proud of all my girls who marched for two hours with a smile. They were AMAZING!
