A book rooted in African American culture

Ms. Scarlette Swanson, Northeast's media and resources coordinator, reads passages from "Mirandy and Brother Wind" to fifth-graders. In the picture book by Patricia C. McKissack, Mirandy determines to catch Brother Wind and have him for her partner in the upcoming junior cakewalk, a dance rooted in African American culture.

Students were challenged on their listening skills and ability to predict how the story would end.
