"I enjoyed making my own lava lamp!"

By Ms. Drenda Brown and Ms. Lisa Reed-Richards

Science Night was a huge success on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

There were plenty of opportunities for students to engage in holistic, hands-on learning.  The stations included an exploration of density by creating a rainbow in a cup. Students realized that liquids can actually float on top of one another.

Students further explored density by creating a suspension, or lava lamp, which had oil floating on water.  In the slime station, students investigated solids and liquids and what happens when one substance isn't exactly a solid nor a liquid all the time.

At the Geodesic Dome station, students used both math and science reasoning skills to design and create a geodesic dome with gumdrops and toothpicks. A lot of fun was had by students, parents, and teachers alike!

"You can learn so much about science on Science Night because the teachers make learning really enjoyable and you learn a lot of new facts," said fifth-grade student Mayra Alfaro. "We get to try out different experiments as well."

Student Khadija Omar also was impressed. "I really enjoyed making my own lava lamp!" the student said.

All grades were represented. As an extra incentive, the students were offered a free dress down for participation.

With all that excitement, we can't wait until next year's event!

Ms. Brown is a second-grade math teacher and Ms. Reed-Richards is a fifth-grade teacher, both of whom helped organize Science Night
